What Causes Dry Eye Disease? How is Dry Eye Treated?

By First Eye Center | Eye Health & Vision Care

If your eyes have been feeling scratchy, tired, or uncomfortable lately, you might be experiencing one of the most common, yet most overlooked - eye conditions in the world: Dry Eye Disease.

But what exactly is happening inside your eye when it becomes dry? And how is it different from a healthy, well-functioning eye?

A healthy eye maintains a stable, consistent tear film that coats the surface of the eye. This tear film is made up of three essential layers - oil, water, and mucus - that work together to keep your eye moist, protected, and clear.

What Happens in a Dry Eye?

In a dry eye, the tear film breaks down. This can happen because the eye doesn't produce enough tears, or because the tears evaporate too quickly, often due to a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

How is Dry Eye Treated?

  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy - one of the most advanced and effective treatments for MGD-related dry eye. IPL targets abnormal blood vessels and unclogs the meibomian glands to restore healthy oil production.
  • Meibomian gland expression
  • Prescription anti-inflammatory eye drops
